Village in the Shade Rule VIII & Great Hole Finale Guide
Rule VIII / 願いには相応の代償が必要 / Every Wish Requires a Fitting Price covers the route from the three Sacred Treasures through the first Hole investigation, Rock-Cutting Nata, the final Great Hole, Kodama, the Land God and the final choice.
Prerequisite
Rules V, VI & VII complete
First Hole
Rin's back route
Final entrance
South mountain road
Final handoff
Two neutral choices
Current Japanese-release Shade baseline, Ver.1.09. Western localization remains future-facing. The Japanese-release examples below are state guidance, not universal calendar promises.
Short answer
The final route in one screen
Finish the three flexible Sacred Treasure routes, resolve the first Hole bridge, then wait for the late-story Shrine milestone and applicable finale Midnight.
Required story state
Rules V, VI and VII
Complete all three routes and their follow-up events. They are parallel choices, not a mandatory V → VI → VII sequence.
Late-story unlock
岩切りナタ
Rock-Cutting Nata becomes usable after the first Hole, scripted Clinic bridge and required story follow-ups.
Route warning
Two Hole approaches
The first investigation uses Rin's back route. The finale uses the south mountain road.
Full Rule VIII & Finale Spoilers Below
The final choice is shown near the end. Ending consequences remain on the Endings guide.
Before starting
Confirm route completion, not just item ownership
The three Sacred Treasures are the prerequisite, but an item in the inventory is not automatically proof that its route follow-up flag is complete.
Rule V
Nue's Hide/ 鵺の皮
Completion: Rule V route completion
Story scope: Movement-related Sacred Treasure effect is relevant to the late-story bridge; exact activation is owned by Fast Travel.
nue-hide
Rule VI
Story Miracle Whistle
Completion: Rule VI route completion and its next-morning follow-up
Story scope: Story-only whistle state; the exact Japanese label and late-story use are not normalized in the repository.
story-miracle-whistle
Rule VII
Chipped Nata/ 欠けたナタ
Completion: Rule VII final ghost reward plus its required follow-up state
Story scope: The Rule VII Sacred Treasure state; later Rock-Cutting Nata functionality is not assigned here.
chipped-nata
Required
All three Sacred Treasure route states and follow-ups. The exact internal flags are not exposed.
Helpful, not a gate
Recovery food, the current Axe and the usable Rock-Cutting Nata can reduce friction. No maximum HP, all skills, all Magatama or Pickaxe requirement is promoted without direct evidence.
Mode boundary
This page follows the Shade baseline. Sunshine parity for Rule VIII, the Great Hole, bosses and choices is unresolved.
Rule VIII boundary
When does Rule VIII start?
The shared story data gives the prerequisite, but not a stable internal start flag or a complete achievement event record.
Japanese title
願いには相応の代償が必要
Every Wish Requires a Fitting Price
Start boundary
After V, VI and VII
Begin the late-story Sacred Treasure bridge only after the three routes and their required follow-up state are complete.
Achievement record
Rule 8
Unravel Rule 8.
Exact unlock moment: unresolved in the current repository.
The first late-story Hole investigation is the practical opening phase in current guide evidence. This page keeps the formal Rule VIII achievement trigger separate from the visible Walkthrough card placement.
Route comparison
There are two different late-story routes to the Hole
This distinction solves the most common finale navigation mistake.
| Phase | Entry | Connector | Route |
|---|---|---|---|
| First investigation | Rin's house | Back route → Underground Passage | Rin's house → back route → underground passage → 穴 |
| Final confrontation | Village south mountain road | Environmental rope | South mountain road → 穴 → rope → finale |
Finale Route Warning
Do not use Rin's house back route for the final Great Hole. Use the mountain road south of the village.
The repository normalizes the general location as underground-passage / Underground Passage. AppMedia uses 穴; 大穴 is retained as a secondary guide alias, not a repository replacement.
First investigation
Rin's house leads to the earlier Hole sequence
This is the Rule VIII story bridge that precedes the functional Rock-Cutting Nata state and the final Great Hole.
Phase 1
Three Sacred Treasures
Complete all three flexible Sacred Treasure routes and continue their follow-up events.
Example: Winter 9–10 · Hard date: No
Phase 2
First Hole investigation
Use Rin's house back route and the Underground Passage for the earlier story investigation.
Example: Winter 11 · Hard date: No
Phase 3
Scripted Clinic bridge
The late-story sequence includes a scripted Clinic wake-up; it is not automatically an HP-zero or ER Regular event.
Example: Winter 13 · Hard date: No
Phase 4
Rock-Cutting Nata becomes usable
After the first Hole sequence and follow-up events, the later 岩切りナタ state becomes usable.
Example: Winter 13 · Hard date: No
If you already visited the Hole and no final boss appeared, that is not necessarily a failure. The first investigation is an earlier Rule VIII phase. Continue the Clinic, village, Kisuke and Shrine progression before looking for the finale Midnight.
Scripted transition
The Clinic wake-up is a story bridge
Keep this event separate from ordinary forced treatment and the ER Regular achievement counter.
Trigger
After the first Hole sequence
The later story transition includes a scripted Clinic wake-up and follow-up village events.
What is not confirmed
HP = 0: No
The current story data does not prove that the player fainted from reaching zero HP, received ordinary forced treatment or earned ER Regular progress.
Owner handoff
Clinic & Fainting
Use the Clinic & Fainting guide for defeat-state semantics and achievement counting.
Late-story unlock
How to unlock the Rock-Cutting Nata
The later functional state belongs to Rule VIII progression, not the immediate Rule VII reward.
State boundary
岩切りナタ / Rock-Cutting Nata
- Stable ID:
- rock-cutting-nata
- Unlock point:
- After the first Hole sequence, scripted Clinic bridge and required follow-up events; Winter 13 is an example, not a hard date.
- Chipped Nata ID:
- chipped-nata
Do not merge the labels
欠けたナタ / Chipped Nata → later named state
Rule VII owns the Chipped Nata reward. The repository does not expose whether Rule VIII mutates one inventory entity, removes and replaces the item, or unlocks a separate ability. Publish the story-state transition without inventing an entity merge.
A freshly acquired Chipped Nata is not credited with wood, grass or rock breaking on the Rule VII page.
Review the Rule VII reward boundary →| Function | Current support | Relevant tool source | Boundary |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cut wood | Yes | Axe | Relevant farming-tool upgrade performance |
| Cut grass | Yes | Sickle | Relevant farming-tool upgrade performance |
| Break rock | Yes | Pickaxe | Relevant farming-tool upgrade performance |
| Till soil | Not documented | — | No current evidence |
| Water crops | Not documented | — | No current evidence |
| Reflect Kodama attack | Story use | — | Finale encounter |
The source says performance follows the relevant farming tools' upgrade state. Exact per-function tier inheritance is not normalized in the repository. It reduces switching for documented clearing; it does not replace the Axe, Pickaxe, Sickle, Hoe or Watering Can in every context.
Late-story bridge
Continue village and Shrine progression
Use story state rather than copying the example Winter calendar as a mandatory checklist.
Village events
Follow the markers
Complete the required late-story village scenes after the first Hole and Clinic bridge.
Kisuke sequence
Repeated night visits
The sample chronology contains repeated Kisuke-related night events. Exact count and scripted-versus-normal-Midnight semantics remain unresolved.
Crossroads Shrine
Story milestone
Finish the Shrine restoration milestone. This does not mean buying every skill or spending every Magatama.
Open Shrine Skills authority →Finale route
Reach the Great Hole from the south mountain road
This is the route that leads to the Kodama and Land God sequence.
1
Final Great Hole route
When the applicable final Midnight is active, use the south mountain-road entrance, not Rin's earlier back route.
2
Kodama / コダマ
Advance while avoiding attacks; at the documented dead-end phase, return the specific attack with Rock-Cutting Nata.
3
Land God / 土地神
Use the Axe on documented tree/root barriers and keep climbing through the confrontation.
4
Final choice
Continue along the documented right-hand route until the two ending choices appear.
Midnight
Wait for the applicable final Midnight exploration state after Shrine completion. Exact flag and timing are not exposed.
Rope
Current source wording describes an environmental rope interaction. No Rope inventory item or crafting requirement is established.
Preparation
Axe and Rock-Cutting Nata are the documented practical tools. Pickaxe remains a source conflict, not a confirmed mandatory item.
Finale encounter
Kodama / コダマ
Treat this as a route-and-reflection encounter, not a conventional melee damage test.
Safe documented strategy
- Follow Kisuke's documented support through the rock section.
- Avoid Kodama's attacks while advancing deeper.
- At the dead-end phase, prepare the Rock-Cutting Nata.
- Use it to return the specific attack toward Kodama and deal damage.
- Repeat only as the encounter requires; no verified hit count is published.
Do not overgeneralize
Nata reflection is specific
Gamecap additionally reports that Nata can clear enemy projectile attacks, but that does not mean it reflects every attack. Normal projectile clearing and the specific dead-end damage interaction are separate claims.
- Boss hit count
- Unknown
- Boss HP
- Not published
- Pickaxe required
- Unresolved
- Direct melee Nata
- Not the documented method
| Evidence | Rock section | Editorial wording |
|---|---|---|
| AppMedia | Kisuke breaks rocks | Use Kisuke's documented support; do not make Pickaxe mandatory. |
| Gamecap | Player Pickaxe wording | Retained as a conflicting current source report. |
| Repository | Pickaxe exists; no finale flag | Pickaxe is not a confirmed finale requirement. |
Finale traversal
Land God / 土地神
The current evidence emphasizes clearing route barriers and climbing, not an invented boss HP loop.
Quick strategy
- Continue after Kodama.
- Use the Axe on the documented tree or root barriers.
- Keep climbing through the available footholds or platforms.
- Follow the scripted confrontation until the right-hand final-choice route opens.
Axe role
Route clearing
AppMedia describes blocking trees; Gamecap describes roots. The safe public wording is tree/root barriers. Neither source proves direct Axe damage to the Land God.
Unknowns
No invented tier or HP
Axe tier, direct damage mechanic, Nata substitution and checkpoint behavior remain unresolved. Do not claim Gold Axe is required for the finale.
Ending handoff
Continue right until the final choice appears
The route is complete at the choice prompt. Keep the consequence details on the specialist Ending authority.
Choice 1
一緒に帰ろ
Displayed here as the exact Japanese prompt only. No Good, Bad or True label is applied.
Choice 2
ここに残る
Displayed here as the exact Japanese prompt only. No outcome duplication is included.
After the ending sequence, Postgame owns Clear Data and continuation. The postgame Miracle Whistle remains separate from the Rule VI story whistle.
Example only
Documented timeline versus required progression
This current Japanese walkthrough chronology helps orient the route, but it is not a universal schedule.
| Example date | Observed phase | Hard gate? |
|---|---|---|
| Winter 9 | Late-story Crossroads bridge | No |
| Winter 10 | Sacred Treasure progression | No |
| Winter 11 | First Hole investigation | No |
| Winter 12 | No specific universal action established | No |
| Winter 13 | Clinic bridge and Rock-Cutting Nata usability | No |
| Winter 14–21 | Village, Kisuke and Shrine progression | No |
| Winter 22 | Final Great Hole and ending sequence | No |
These dates come from one current Japanese walkthrough. They are not universal hard gates; earlier Sacred Treasure order, story timing and Midnight availability can shift progression. Winter 12 has no specific universal action established in the current evidence.
Troubleshooting
When the finale does not trigger
Check state and route ownership before waiting for a particular date.
Rule VIII will not start
Confirm Rules V, VI and VII route follow-ups, not only three item labels. Check active story markers and any unresolved Sacred Treasure bridge.
I already visited the Hole
The first Hole investigation is earlier than the finale. Continue the Clinic, village, Kisuke and Crossroads Shrine progression.
Rin's route fails at the finale
Use the village's southern mountain road for the final Great Hole. Rin's back route belongs to the first investigation.
Clinic wake-up happened
Treat it as a scripted Rule VIII transition unless direct evidence shows ordinary HP-zero treatment. Do not count it as ER Regular by assumption.
Chipped Nata has no new function
The Chipped state alone is not the later Rock-Cutting state. Continue the first Hole and follow-up sequence.
Nata clears attacks but Kodama is safe
Normal projectile clearing is not automatically the dead-end reflected damage interaction. Use the specific documented attack at that phase.
Final Midnight is missing
Confirm Shrine story completion, the final story phase, the applicable Midnight marker and the south-road entrance. Do not impose Winter 22 as a hard date.
Do I need every Shrine skill?
No such requirement is established. Story Shrine completion and full skill-tree completion are different authorities.
FAQ
Rule VIII and Great Hole questions
Answers stay aligned with the visible content and its evidence boundaries.
How do I start Rule VIII?
Complete the Rule V, Rule VI and Rule VII Sacred Treasure routes and their required follow-up story states. Their order is flexible; owning three items alone is not proof that every route flag is complete.
What is Rule VIII called?
The Japanese title is 願いには相応の代償が必要. The repository's canonical working English is Every Wish Requires a Fitting Price.
How do I get to the Hole during the first Rule VIII investigation?
Use Rin's house, its back route and the Underground Passage for the first late-story investigation. This is different from the finale entrance.
How do I reach the Great Hole for the finale?
After the late-story Shrine progression and an applicable final Midnight, take the mountain road south of the village, reach the Hole and descend the environmental rope. Do not repeat Rin's earlier back route.
How do I get Rock-Cutting Nata?
After the first Hole sequence, scripted Clinic bridge and required follow-up events, the later 岩切りナタ / Rock-Cutting Nata state becomes usable. Winter 13 is an example chronology, not a universal date.
Is Chipped Nata the same as Rock-Cutting Nata?
The repository does not expose a shared inventory ID or prove whether the later state replaces the earlier one. Keep 欠けたナタ / Chipped Nata and 岩切りナタ / Rock-Cutting Nata as separate named story states.
What can Rock-Cutting Nata break?
Current guide evidence supports wood, grass and rock clearing. Tilling soil and watering crops are not documented, and the Nata does not replace every tool forever.
Do I need a Pickaxe for Kodama?
Current sources differ: AppMedia says Kisuke breaks the rocks, while Gamecap describes the player breaking rocks with a Pickaxe. Treat Pickaxe as unresolved rather than a mandatory requirement until the current-version mechanic is directly confirmed.
How do you beat Kodama?
Advance while avoiding Kodama's attacks and using Kisuke's documented route support. At the dead-end damage phase, use Rock-Cutting Nata to return the specific attack; do not rely on normal melee hits or an invented hit count.
How do you beat the Land God?
Use the Axe on the documented tree or root barriers and keep climbing through the available footholds. The current evidence does not establish that the Axe directly damages the Land God.
What are the final choices?
The prompt is 一緒に帰ろ and ここに残る. Open the Endings guide for consequences and replay advice; this page does not label either choice Good, Bad or True.
Are Winter 11, 13 and 22 fixed dates?
No. They are dates from one current Japanese walkthrough. Use story state, route flags and the applicable Midnight rather than treating the example calendar as a hard gate.
