Village in the Shade Rule V Mountain Pass Guide
Rule V / 村を出てはならぬ / Do Not Leave the Village uses a separate Handheld Lantern / 手持ち提灯, a Watering Can and multiple Midnight visits around the Mountain Pass / 峠. This page follows story-state order so approximate calendar examples do not become false universal gates.
English item, location and boss names follow current Japanese-release terminology. The official Western release remains future-dated for October 27, 2026, so working English labels are paired with Japanese names where useful.

Timing warning
The Lantern recipe does not guarantee Midnight that night
Craft the Lantern during the day, then continue normal progression until an eligible Midnight phase occurs. Do not treat the recipe event as a same-night trigger.
Spoiler-light preparation
What to prepare before Rule V
Keep the start gate, puzzle tools and boss preparation separate.
Required for the pass
Handheld Lantern / 手持ち提灯
The story unlocks a Workbench recipe during the Mukou Crossroads and Library sequence. The repository does not claim that Sumire hands over a finished Lantern.
Open Workbench authorityRequired for the puzzle
Watering Can / ジョウロ
Bring a usable Watering Can. The current story data says an upgraded tier is helpful, not mandatory; no tier requirement is invented here.
Open Tools authorityPrepare before the finale
Bow / 弓 and arrows
The documented Nue method uses the Bow after a large lightning strike. Whether alternate attacks work or whether the Bow is required before starting Rule V remains unknown.
Check Bow progressionBamboo
The Lantern uses Bamboo x2. Use the Gathering & Materials guide for source coverage; this page does not duplicate a Bamboo farming table.
Easy Wood and Hard Wood
The shared material labels are Easy Wood and Hard Wood. Use the Tree Types, Wood & Sap guide for the wood authority.
Start condition
Why Rule V will not start
Check story state, route lock and Chinana's actual vendor availability together.
Start at Chinana / チナナ
When the Sacred Treasure phase is available, visit Chinana at the Street Vendor / 露天商 on a normal business day. Shared schedule data lists Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Sunday from 07:00-17:00.
- Confirm the Sacred Treasure routes are unlocked.
- Confirm Rule VI or Rule VII is not the active route.
- Complete the preceding Rule IV and bridge events required by your save.
- Visit the vendor while the stall is open, not merely when Chinana is present elsewhere.
Flexible route
Rule V is not always first
Rules V, VI and VII are parallel Sacred Treasure routes. They can be started in different orders, but only one route can actively progress at a time. Finish the active route before expecting another to advance.

Where the recipe comes from
- Keep Rule V active and continue the Mukou Crossroads story.
- Complete the applicable Hasumi, Nago and Library bridge events.
- Visit the Library on an open day; shared schedule data marks Saturday and Sunday closed.
- Continue the Sumire interaction until the recipe is learned.
- Use the Workbench to craft the Lantern before the next eligible Midnight.

Rule V progression by story phase
Use this sequence when preparation is complete. Dates are intentionally omitted from the primary route.
01
Daytime, Chinana business dayStart Rule V
Talk to Chinana at the open Street Vendor location.
- Confirm the Three Sacred Treasures phase is available.
- Check that Rule VI or Rule VII is not currently active.
- Visit Chinana at the Street Vendor on an open day.
NPC presence and shop availability are separate checks.
02
Daytime story bridgeUnlock the Lantern recipe
Continue the Mukou Crossroads and Library sequence.
- Complete the applicable Mukou Crossroads and Hasumi event.
- Go to the Library when it is open; the Library is closed Saturday and Sunday in shared schedule data.
- Continue the Nago and Sumire events until the Handheld Lantern recipe is learned.
- Craft the Lantern at the Workbench before the next eligible Midnight opportunity.
Receiving the recipe does not guarantee Midnight exploration on that same night.
03
Eligible MidnightClear the first Mountain Pass fog
Carry the Handheld Lantern through the Mountain Pass tunnel and clear the Hitodama.
- Wait for the Rule V Midnight phase instead of forcing a fixed date.
- Carry the Handheld Lantern and bring the Watering Can.
- Enter the Mountain Pass / 峠 through the tunnel.
- Use the Watering Can continuously on each Hitodama / 人魂.
- Back away when a Hitodama opens its mouth and attacks.
- Clear all recorded targets so the fog lifts and the route opens.
The current route records four targets for the core puzzle. Later visits still use the same clear-all-targets pattern, but a fixed count for every visit is not claimed.
04
Next applicable story dayFollow the daytime story bridge
Let the scripted story continue after the first pass event.
- The story continues with a scripted Clinic wake-up/event.
- Leave the Clinic and follow the Nago, Hasumi and Sumire daytime scenes when available.
- Do not interpret this scripted scene as proof of HP reaching zero or as an ER Regular increment.
Clinic and Fainting owns forced-treatment semantics.
05
Next eligible MidnightReturn to the pass
Repeat the Lantern and Watering Can route and meet Sumire beyond the tunnel.
- Return to the Mountain Pass with the Handheld Lantern and Watering Can.
- Clear the Hitodama again to open the deeper route.
- Continue through the tunnel and meet Sumire.
- Return to the village after the event and continue normal Midnight exploration if the session remains active.
Festival days, schedules and story flags can shift the next eligible night.
06
Later eligible MidnightHandle the lightning-rod stage
Clear the deeper pass while the lightning-rod hazard is active.
- Enter the deeper Mountain Pass state with the Lantern and Watering Can.
- Clear the Hitodama before advancing farther.
- Watch for lightning strikes and move during a safe gap.
- Pull out each lightning rod when lightning is not striking.
- Continue after the hazard and follow the Sumire encounter.
The current source does not establish the rod count, damage value or an exact safe interval.
07
After the lightning phaseReach the Nue encounter
Complete the story setup before the final fight.
- Follow the deeper pass route after clearing the required Hitodama.
- Meet Sumire and continue the Nago, Sumire and Hasumi encounter scene.
- Do not expect the first Mountain Pass visit to begin the boss fight immediately.
08
Final eligible MidnightDefeat Nue
Use the Bow during Nue's documented opening while avoiding lightning.
- Return to the deeper Mountain Pass state with a Bow and arrows prepared.
- Watch the lightning pattern and avoid the surrounding strikes.
- When Nue lands with a large lightning strike, shoot with the Bow during that opening.
- Repeat the documented damage window until the encounter resolves.
- Receive the Sacred Treasure Nue's Hide / 鵺の皮 after the defeat.
Exact HP, phases, arrow count and alternate damage methods are not confirmed.
09
Following daytime story eventsComplete the follow-up
Finish the post-boss story handoff.
- Follow the next Clinic and Library events when their facilities are available.
- Rule V completion can change Chinana's village presence outside her normal Street Vendor business days.
- Keep the Hide separate from the Lantern and Machine Part #30 cleanup systems.
Post-clear business hours remain owned by Shops and Villager Schedules.
Mountain Pass puzzle
Clear the fog by dealing with Hitodama
Hitodama / 人魂 is the route's consistent target name. Keep it distinct from generic Night Anomaly taxonomy.
Core solution
Water continuously, then create distance
- Enter the Mountain Pass during the applicable Midnight phase with the Handheld Lantern.
- Find a Hitodama and keep applying the Watering Can rather than using one tap.
- When it opens its mouth and attacks, back away while maintaining the water action.
- Repeat for the remaining targets in the area.
- Clearing the required targets lifts the fog and opens the next route section.
Four targets, but not four every night
The current shared Rule V record and Gamecap route describe four Hitodama for the core puzzle. Later visits use the same clear-all-targets pattern, but the repository does not claim that every repeated visit always contains exactly four.

Lightning and Nue
The first pass is not the boss fight
Rule V advances through more than one Mountain Pass Midnight state.
Lightning-rod stage
Pull rods between strikes
In the deeper pass, watch the lightning pattern. Move during a gap and pull out the lightning rods. The number of rods, strike damage and exact timing are unresolved.
Nue setup
Finish the encounter bridge
A later pass sequence brings Sumire, Nago and Hasumi into the Nue encounter. Do not expect the first fog-clearing visit to begin the final fight immediately.
Final fight
Bow after the large strike
Avoid the surrounding lightning. When Nue lands with a large lightning strike, shoot with the Bow during the opening. Exact HP, phases and arrow count are not published.
Reward
Nue's Hide / 鵺の皮
The Hide is the Sacred Treasure reward after the documented Nue defeat. It is not presented as wearable armor. A later movement record connects it to faster running, while exact multiplier, activation state and controls remain unknown.
Movement authorityDo not over-specify the boss
- Bow damage window: documented after the large lightning landing.
- Lightning: active hazard throughout the fight.
- Boss phases: unknown.
- Exact arrow requirement: unknown.
- Safe spot, HP and damage values: unknown.
Story handoff
The Clinic scene is scripted
Keep the story transition separate from ordinary fainting and ER Regular semantics.
Trigger
After the first Mountain Pass event, the next applicable story day continues with a Clinic wake-up and daytime Nago, Hasumi and Sumire events.
Not confirmed
The current evidence does not prove HP reached zero, an ordinary forced-treatment event occurred or that the scene increments the ER Regular milestone.
Use the right owner
Walkthrough owns story order. Clinic & Fainting owns defeat-state and achievement-counting semantics.
Post-story reuse
Handheld Lantern versus Flashlight
The Mountain Pass uses the dedicated Lantern item; Machine Part #30 keeps that distinction visible.
Rule V
Handheld Lantern / 手持ち提灯
Crafted at the Workbench from the story recipe and carried through the Mountain Pass phases.
Ordinary cleanup
Flashlight / 懐中電灯
The normal reveal tool for most Machine Parts and many midnight interactions. It is not silently substituted for the Rule V Lantern.
Part #30
Nue battle area
The later record uses the Handheld Lantern to locate a fireball. Whether the final extinguish interaction also uses the Watering Can remains unresolved.

FAQ
Rule V questions
The visible answers and FAQ schema use the same source-backed list.
How do I start Rule V?
After the Sacred Treasure routes become available, talk to Chinana at the open Street Vendor. Confirm that another Sacred Treasure route is not already active and that the required preceding story events are complete.
What does Rule V require?
The route requires the Handheld Lantern and Watering Can for the Mountain Pass puzzle. Prepare a Bow and arrows before the final Nue sequence; the current evidence does not prove that the Bow is a strict Rule V start gate.
How do I get the Handheld Lantern?
Continue the Mukou Crossroads and Library story sequence. Sumire unlocks the Handheld Lantern recipe during the story; craft the finished Lantern at the Workbench before a later eligible Midnight visit.
What is the Handheld Lantern recipe?
The shared Workbench recipe is Bamboo x2, Easy Wood x5 and Hard Wood x5. These are the current site material names; the recipe is not a shop purchase or a finished-item reward claim.
Does getting the recipe guarantee Midnight that night?
No. Learning the Handheld Lantern recipe does not guarantee a Midnight exploration opportunity on the same night. Continue normal progression and wait for the next eligible story phase.
Can I use the Flashlight instead of the Handheld Lantern?
No substitution is claimed. Rule V uses the separate Handheld Lantern, while ordinary Machine Parts generally use the Flashlight. Keep the two items separate.
How do I remove the Mountain Pass fog?
Bring the Handheld Lantern and use the Watering Can continuously on the Hitodama in the Mountain Pass. Clear the required targets to lift the fog and open the route.
How do I defeat the Hitodama?
Apply water continuously rather than tapping once, and back away when the Hitodama opens its mouth and attacks. The current core route records four targets.
Why will the Hitodama not disappear?
Check that the Rule V Midnight phase is active, the Handheld Lantern is with you, the Watering Can is usable and you are watering the correct target continuously. Exact duration and Watering Can tier requirements are unknown.
Does Rule V take multiple Midnight visits?
Yes. The route is a sequence of daytime story bridges and multiple eligible Midnight phases. It is not a fixed one-night trip from the recipe directly to the Nue fight.
What are the lightning rods for?
In the later Mountain Pass phase, lightning rods are a hazard interaction. Pull them out during a gap when lightning is not striking. Their exact count, damage and safe interval are not verified.
How do I beat Nue?
Avoid the surrounding lightning and use the Bow when Nue lands with a large lightning strike. Shoot during that documented opening and repeat until the encounter resolves.
What does Nue drop?
Defeating Nue awards the Sacred Treasure Nue's Hide / 鵺の皮. It is not documented as equipable armor; a later movement-speed relationship exists, but its exact multiplier and activation are unknown.
Why did I wake up at the Clinic during Rule V?
The first Mountain Pass event is followed by a scripted Clinic wake-up and daytime story bridge. Do not automatically interpret it as an HP-zero defeat or an ER Regular counter increase.
Can I do the Sacred Treasure routes in any order?
Rules V, VI and VII can be started in different orders. Once one Sacred Treasure route is active, finish it before expecting another route to progress.
Does the Handheld Lantern have any use after Rule V?
Machine Part #30 at the Nue battle area is the documented later reuse. The Handheld Lantern locates the fireball, but the current source does not isolate whether the final extinguish interaction also uses the Watering Can.
Is Rule V required before Rule VI and Rule VII?
No. The three Sacred Treasure routes are flexible. Rule VIII waits for all three routes to be complete, but Rule V is not presented as a universal first choice.
Is Rule V a permanent missable?
No permanent missable date is claimed here. A closed vendor, festival delay or inactive Midnight phase is an availability delay, not proof that the route was lost.
