The first box flow is blueprint → Workbench → Wood ×30 → actual Wooden Storage Box. Nearby Workbench storage does not require Linking, and linked boxes do not become one global crafting inventory.

Early progression

How to Get Your First Storage Box

Keep the blueprint source separate from crafting the finished item.

1 · Blueprint

Follow early story / Workbench tutorial progression

The current evidence points to the early Workbench tutorial and home progression. The exact quest name and fixed calendar day are not isolated in the canonical story timeline; treat Spring 3 as a research lead, not a universal guarantee.

2 · Craft

Use the Workbench

The Wooden Storage Box is a Workbench recipe. Wood ×30 is the recipe material requirement, not the price of a finished shop item and not the blueprint unlock condition.

3 · Place

Place the finished box

After crafting, the result is a player-placed Storage Box. Sell value, capacity, move/recovery behavior and a complete indoor/outdoor placement matrix remain unverified.

Storage Basics

Store items without filling your carry inventory

Storage Boxes are placed furniture for item organization. They are separate from Bag Upgrades, which own player carry capacity.

1. Place a functional box

Create a home for materials

The current functional records are Wooden Storage Box and Modern Storage Box. Capacity and a complete placement matrix remain undocumented.

2. Deposit items

Organize by your own workflow

Use example categories such as crops, ore, fish or delivery reserves. These are player organization ideas, not game-defined tabs.

3. Add local access

Put high-use boxes near the Workbench

Local placement matters for direct crafting. Linking helps manual navigation between boxes, but it does not replace the local Workbench rule.

Bag Upgrades own carried inventory while Storage Boxes own deposited storage. See the Bag Upgrades Guide for capacity progression, and keep that system separate from Storage Boxes.

Workbench Integration

How Workbench nearby storage works

The direct crafting rule is local surrounding storage, not a farm-wide link.

Direct answer

Place Storage Boxes in the eight tiles directly surrounding the Workbench.

Materials in those nearby boxes can be used for Workbench crafting without first moving them into your carried inventory. This is adjacent-8 geometry, not an 8-tile radius, not a whole-farm rule and not an eight-box maximum.

No Linking skill is required for this nearby-storage behavior.

S = surrounding position · W = Workbench

Conceptual geometry only. You do not need to fill every position, and the diagram does not prove every position can always hold a box.

Inventory plus box aggregation

The broad source supports nearby-box material use. Exact quantity aggregation between carried inventory and several boxes, split-order behavior and consumption priority are not separately verified.

Multiple boxes

The eight positions describe space around the station. They do not establish a maximum number of boxes, a required box count or a universal one-box-per-position placement guarantee.

Station ownership

Workbench purchase, recipe visibility and crafting records belong to the Workbench Guide. This page owns the Storage Box side of the relationship.

Verified station scope

Which Stations Can Use Nearby Storage?

Only station relationships with explicit current evidence are listed as verified.

Verified

Workbench · 作業台

Materials can be used from Storage Boxes in the eight surrounding tiles. Nearby use works independently of Storage Box Linking.

Dyeing Table · 染色台

The Dyeing Table record also uses nearby material access from the surrounding 8 tiles. Item-by-item retrieval of furniture versus Dye remains a narrower unresolved question.

Not verified here: Anvil, cooking stations, Furnace, processors, construction service, Storage Barn and Silo. Do not generalize one station's adjacency rule to the rest of the game.

Shrine Skill · 収納箱の連結術

Storage Box Linking Technique

A quality-of-life skill for moving between multiple boxes through the storage interface, not a storage-capacity upgrade.

Japanese name: 収納箱の連結術

Switch or move items between multiple boxes

The canonical Shrine record places this technique at Repair Stage 4. Its verified effect is storage-interface switching or movement among multiple Storage Boxes. Contents remain separate by box; the skill does not merge capacities.

Switch / list UI

Use the in-game box-switch or list controls after unlocking the skill. A Japanese controller guide reports R2/L2 switching on PlayStation; that is platform-specific evidence, not a universal binding.

Naming

Player-tested UI reports support naming boxes. Exact button, name length, allowed characters and rename repeatability remain unverified. Names are labels, not gameplay modifiers.

Distance

The skill's multiple-box effect is verified; the exact physical distance boundary, all-box inclusion and remote deposit/withdrawal behavior are not isolated.

Do not combine these rules

Storage Box Linking vs Workbench Storage

The two systems solve different problems and have different boundaries.

Comparison of Workbench nearby storage and Storage Box Linking
MechanicWhat it doesWhat it does not prove
Workbench nearby storageLets the Workbench consume crafting materials from boxes in its eight surrounding tiles. It does not require Linking, make remote boxes available or establish a global storage search.
Storage Box LinkingLets the player switch or move contents between multiple Storage Boxes through the storage UI.It does not increase capacity, merge box inventories or extend Workbench adjacency.

Why they are separate: nearby Workbench storage is an early placement behavior, while Linking is a Repair Stage 4 Shrine technique. Unlocking Linking does not turn every station into a consumer of every placed box.

Practical Setup

How to Organize Storage Boxes

Use these as objective workflow labels, not as game-defined categories or a mandatory layout.

Workbench core

Keep high-use Wood, Stone and common crafting inputs in the surrounding 8 tiles.

Delivery reserve

Separate branded goods, gems and other items saved for a future delivery.

Farm box

Group seeds, harvested crops and field supplies as an example organization.

Mining box

Keep ore, ingots and stone together if that matches your current upgrade route.

Fishing box

Store fish and bait separately from materials used at the Workbench.

Keep delivery materials separate

A dedicated box can reduce the risk of accidentally processing or selling branded goods and gems saved for High-Quality Goods delivery. It is a protection habit, not an automatic item lock.

System boundaries

Storage Box vs Shipping Box, Storage Barn, Silo & Bag

Similar-looking containers belong to different systems.

Storage Box

Player-placed item storage. Wooden and Modern Storage Box are the current functional records; contents remain associated with the box.

Shipping Box

Home shipment point. Lin settles sellable contents the next morning; it is not general storage or linked storage.

Owning guide →

Storage Barn

A Buildings record for storage-room space. The current data does not establish it as a general inventory container or giant Storage Box.

Owning guide →

Silo

Fodder storage for the animal-housing/building system. Do not include it in Storage Box Linking or treat its fodder capacity as general item slots.

Owning guide →

Player Bag

Carried inventory while traveling. Large Bag and Very Large Bag upgrades do not increase Storage Box capacity.

Brown is treated as the base public variant; other colors are cosmetic dye variants, not separate storage mechanics.

Variants: the current canonical data has 2 functional base styles. Modern Storage Box colors are grouped as cosmetic variants and can be handled through the Dyeing Table; a complete color count, Wooden color lineage, Catalog trigger and capacity difference are not verified. See the Collection Catalog Guide for completion semantics.

Troubleshooting

Why can't my Workbench see stored materials?

Check the local access rule before moving every item into your bag.

The Storage Box is not in one of the 8 surrounding tiles.
The item is in a linked or remote box rather than a nearby box.
The recipe needs more units than the accessible boxes contain.
You are using Anvil, a cooking station or a processing machine and assuming it shares the Workbench rule.
The box is functional storage only after you confirm its category and item behavior.
You are treating Bag Upgrades and Storage Boxes as the same inventory system.

For station details use the Workbench Guide; for Shrine progression use Shrine Skills.

FAQ

Storage Box questions

How do you get a Storage Box?

The current source path is early story or Workbench tutorial progression for the Wooden Storage Box blueprint, followed by crafting the actual box at a Workbench with Wood ×30. The exact day is not isolated in the canonical timeline.

How do you make a Wooden Storage Box?

Learn the Wooden Storage Box blueprint, use a Workbench and supply Wood ×30. Wood ×30 is the crafting recipe, not a shop price or a separate blueprint unlock cost.

Can the Workbench use items inside Storage Boxes?

Yes. The Workbench can use crafting materials from Storage Boxes placed in the eight tiles directly surrounding it, without first moving those materials into your carried inventory.

How close must a Storage Box be to the Workbench?

Use one of the Workbench's eight surrounding tiles. This is adjacent-8 geometry, not an 8-tile radius and not an eight-box maximum.

Does nearby Workbench storage require Storage Box Linking?

No. Workbench nearby storage works independently of Storage Box Linking. Linking is a later Shrine skill for storage-interface navigation.

Does the Workbench use all linked Storage Boxes?

Not as a verified crafting rule. Linking changes manual storage access; Workbench crafting remains governed by the local surrounding-8 placement rule.

What does Storage Box Linking do?

Storage Box Linking Technique (収納箱の連結術) lets you switch or move contents between multiple Storage Boxes through the storage interface. It does not merge capacity or create a global Workbench crafting network.

What does Storage Box Linking cost?

At Repair Stage 4, the recorded cost is Standard Magatama ×2, Twin Magatama ×2, Child Magatama ×1 and Bronze Mirror ×2.

Can you switch between Storage Boxes remotely?

The verified effect supports switching or moving among multiple boxes through the storage interface. Exact distance, remote deposit/withdrawal semantics and whether every placed box appears are not isolated in the canonical data.

How do I switch or list Storage Boxes?

After unlocking Linking, use the storage interface's box-switch or list controls. Button labels vary by platform and layout, so this guide does not publish one universal controller binding.

Can I rename Storage Boxes?

Current player-tested UI reports support naming boxes, but the canonical repository does not verify the exact control, name limits or repeatability. Treat names as organization labels only; they do not change capacity or range.

How much can a Storage Box hold?

Capacity, stack limits, item-category restrictions and differences between box styles are not verified in the current canonical records.

Can Storage Boxes be moved with items inside?

Move, pickup and recovery behavior for boxes that contain items is not verified. Do not treat a player report as a safe recovery guarantee for important items.

Can the Dyeing Table use nearby Storage Boxes?

Yes. The current Dyeing Table record uses the same surrounding-8-tiles adjacency constant for nearby material access. See the Dyeing Table Guide for furniture-color rules.

Can the Anvil or processors use nearby Storage Boxes?

Not verified. Do not generalize the Workbench or Dyeing Table evidence to Anvil, cooking stations, Furnace or processing machines.

Is a Storage Box the same as the Shipping Box?

No. A Storage Box holds items at a placed location. The Shipping Box is the home delivery and next-morning sale container; linked storage does not become a shipping point.

Is the Storage Barn global storage?

No such general inventory behavior is verified. Storage Barn is a building-space record owned by Buildings, while Silo stores fodder and is not ordinary item storage.

Do colored Storage Boxes have different capacity?

No capacity difference is verified. The repository groups Modern Storage Box colors as variants and does not publish a complete color count or per-color capacity.

Shared Box tips

Use them as local caches

A Shared Box near a fishing or resource area can hold temporary overflow or items needed in that location. Opening a different Shared Box elsewhere does not currently reveal the same contents.

The repository does not confirm whether Storage Box Linking affects Shared Boxes. Treat them as a separate system and do not describe a global shared inventory.

Also separate: the Shipping Bin handles shipments, and the Hunting Certificate Box handles Lodge submissions. Neither is a general Storage Box and neither participates in the Linked Storage model.

Storage vs Bag

Carry capacity and deposited storage solve different problems

Bag Upgrades expand what you carry while traveling. Storage Boxes hold deposited items at placed locations. Linked Storage changes how eligible boxes are accessed; it does not increase Bag capacity or create automatic sorting.
