Village in the Shade Tool Controls & Effect Range Guide
The canonical control reference for the Farming-Tool Circle, tool selection and use, continuous farming inputs, Effect Range selection and context-sensitive L / L1 behavior. Unknown platform mappings are left explicit.
Quick answer: on Switch, current hands-on evidence documents ZR for the Farming-Tool Circle and Y for the equipped farming tool. Hold the normal action to water or sow continuously. For a compatible upgraded tool, use D-pad Left / Right to choose Effect Range.

What is verified on each platform
Nintendo Switch
Verified + Player-tested
ZR opens the circle; A confirmation and Y use are player-tested. D-pad Left / Right changes compatible Effect Range. Focus is L; whistle selection is ZR + L.
Switch 2
Not verified
Official patches cover the platform, but this control mapping was not separately verified. Do not silently copy Switch labels.
PlayStation 5
Partially verified
Full Tool Circle and farming-tool mapping are unresolved. Focus is L1; whistle selection is R2 + L1. R2 alone is not claimed as the Tool Circle.
PC / Steam / Windows
Not verified
Keyboard, mouse, controller glyphs and rebinding are not verified. Use the live Controls/Settings screen.
農具サークル
Farming-Tool Circle flow
01
Open
Press the documented Switch ZR input.
02
Select
Choose the desired tool in the circle. The exact selection device is not separately documented.
03
Confirm
A is reported by a post-release player source; label it player-tested.
04
Use
Y is the documented primary farming-tool use input in hands-on reports.
The circle’s tap-versus-hold behavior, close behavior, mid-action behavior and clock/world pause are unresolved. This page uses Farming-Tool Circle (農具サークル) first, then Tool Circle as the short form.
Context-sensitive input
L / L1 is not one global action
L alone
Focus / Observe near a supported target on Switch; not a universal action.
L + left stick
Direction-preserving movement in player-tested reports; current Ver.1.09 direct confirmation unavailable.
ZR + L
Whistle-selection path on Switch, documented by the whistle authority.
L1
Focus / Observe on PS5.
R2 + L1
Whistle-selection path on PS5; this does not independently prove R2 alone opens the Tool Circle.
Final context model
No contradiction is established. Treat the action as context + modifier + target: movement, a valid Focus target and the whistle-selection path can give L different meanings. Do not write “L always locks direction” or “L always activates Focus.”
Continuous farming actions
Watering and normal seed sowing
Continuous Watering
The current official gameplay tip confirms: hold the normal Watering Can action to keep watering. This is continuous manual input, not Sprinkler automation.
- Movement during use
- Not verified.
- Range interaction
- Compatible upgraded range can be selected with D-pad Left / Right; changing it while emitting is unresolved.
- Water / Stamina
- Consumption, empty-can behavior and scaling are unresolved.
Continuous normal seed sowing
The current official gameplay tip confirms holding the sow/use action to sow normal seeds continuously.
- Special planting
- Tree saplings, flowers, paddy, Mud Seed and pasture starter are not inherited by assumption.
- Movement / invalid tiles
- Not verified.
- Stack depletion
- Not verified.
Seeds are not Tools. This page covers seed sowing only because it shares the continuous-input workflow; the Farming and crop authorities retain planting mechanics.
Effect Range
Adjust a compatible upgraded tool
For an upgraded tool whose effect area expands, equip it and use D-pad Left / Right to choose the active Effect Range. An upgradeable tool is not automatically a tool with selectable multi-tile range, and larger area is not the same as more power, fewer hits, lower Stamina or more Watering Can capacity.

Still unresolved: first supported tier, exact number of range levels, shapes, per-range Stamina, Watering Can water scaling and exact per-tool/save scope. Do not fill these gaps from the five-family metal upgrade table.
Persistence and patch history
Range selection persists after the Ver.1.04-era change
Official social guidance says the selected range is reset on the first launch after applying Ver.1.04, then retained on later launches. That is a historical migration note, not a current recurring reset rule. The current official Ver.1.09 patch notice contains no range-specific regression or fix, so the source-backed current baseline is retention with no later regression found—not a direct in-game Ver.1.09 test. Per-tool, per-save and exact restart scope remain unresolved.
The official Ver.1.08 notice adds tips for changing tool range. It does not replace the official social wording about persistence.

Troubleshooting
When a control does not seem to work
- Confirm the game is reading the intended platform layout; PC bindings and Switch 2 parity are not assumed.
- For range changes, equip the upgraded tool first and use D-pad Left / Right. Unresolved tools are not proof of unsupported range.
- For Focus, use L/L1 near a supported target; Focus is target-sensitive and does not replace the normal action.
- For whistle selection, use the separate documented context: Switch ZR + L, PS5 R2 + L1.
- For continuous actions, hold the action rather than repeatedly tapping; exact movement and resource behavior are not established.
- Check the live Controls/Settings screen for PC or remapped layouts; this guide does not invent keyboard keys.
FAQ
Tool control questions
How do you open the Tool Circle?
On Nintendo Switch, current firsthand reports document ZR for the Farming-Tool Circle (農具サークル). Tap/hold and close behavior are not independently verified.
What button uses a farming tool on Switch?
Y is the documented primary farming-tool use input in established hands-on reports. This guide does not claim Y for every item or interaction.
How do you change tool range?
Equip a compatible upgraded tool, then use D-pad Left or Right to switch its available Effect Range. Current official examples explicitly include the Watering Can and Hoe.
Can you water continuously?
Yes. Hold the normal Watering Can action to continue watering instead of repeatedly tapping. Movement, stamina and water-capacity behavior remain unresolved.
Can you plant seeds continuously?
Yes for the documented normal seed-sowing workflow: hold the sow/use action. Do not extend that rule to tree saplings, flowers, paddy systems, Mud Seeds or pasture starters without separate evidence.
What is the PC key for the Tool Circle?
The current source set does not verify a Steam/Windows keyboard, mouse or controller mapping. Check the live Controls/Settings screen rather than guessing Q, E, Tab, Shift or mouse buttons.
Why does L have several functions?
Controls are context-sensitive: L can be Focus, L + left stick can preserve facing while moving, and ZR + L is the Switch whistle-selection path. L is not one global action.
Does the Tool Circle pause time?
Clock, world-pause and processor-timer behavior are not verified here. See the Time & Sleep authority; a visible clock pause would not automatically prove every timer freezes.
Research note
Current baseline: Ver.1.09. Switch ZR/Y and L + stick come from established hands-on/player reports; current official content confirms continuous watering, continuous normal seed sowing, D-pad range selection and post-Ver.1.04 retention. PC mappings, full PS5 tool mappings, Switch 2 parity and direct in-game current-build testing remain open.
