Do not try to defeat every Hyakume. Among the crowd, one has an eye that looks like a shooting target. Use glowing stone monuments to clear the spreading black mist, slow Hyakume with the Flashlight, then shoot the target eye with your Bow to end the encounter.

Hyakume is a naturally random Midnight anomaly from Spring onward. Keep moving and watch the black mist.

Control visibility
Find the glowing stone monuments and use or approach them to temporarily clear or reduce the mist.

Slow the crowd
Shine the Flashlight on grouped Hyakume so their movement slows while you inspect their eyes.

Shoot the target eye
Find the one eye that resembles a shooting target and hit it with the Bow. All Hyakume disappear.

Normal Hyakume have ordinary eyes. The special Hyakume has an eye that resembles a target or kyudo/archery target. Do not infer a red, gold or glowing eye color.
How does the black mist work?
As the encounter continues, black mist progressively obscures your view. No fixed timer, visibility percentage, damage value or instant-failure threshold is published.
What do glowing monuments do?
Use or approach a glowing stone monument during the encounter to temporarily clear or reduce the black mist, then use the clearer window to inspect the crowd.
Use the Flashlight to Slow Hyakume
Shining the Flashlight on Hyakume slows their movement, which helps you inspect several eyes before taking the Bow shot. If a group gathers, slowing the group is a practical strategy, not a claim that every encounter requires a particular grouping pattern.
Shoot the Target Eye With the Bow
Once you identify the target-eyed Hyakume, switch to the Bow and shoot that eye. A successful hit causes all Hyakume to disappear and completes the encounter. No Bow upgrade, distance, damage or hit-count requirement is asserted.
Unlike Tengu, where normal Flashlight behavior is unreliable in the special candle search, Hyakume research specifically supports Flashlight slowing.

百目の木札 is the Ghost Shelf plaque associated with Hyakume. Stable ID: hyakume-wooden-plaque. Source: midnight-glowing-pickup. Consumption, persistence, reuse and same-night activation remain unverified.
Hyakume Lost Books / Lore
No.26, 口伝「黒きもの」, is a normal Forest location record and is not marked as encounter-required. No.40, 黒いモヤの話, is near the village smoking area and current Japanese location research marks it as Hyakume-appearance limited.
Whether No.40 persists before or after a cleared encounter remains unresolved. The Lost Books guide owns the complete 55-book table.

Hyakume is a Midnight anomaly listed from Spring onward. It is not ordinary daytime or evening content, and it is not guaranteed every Midnight.
Which Hyakume should I shoot?
Look for the one Hyakume whose eye resembles a shooting or kyudo target rather than a normal eyeball. There is one special target-eyed Hyakume among the crowd.
Do I need to defeat every Hyakume?
No. The normal Hyakume are distractions and movement pressure. The encounter ends when you shoot the special target-like eye.
How do I clear the black mist?
Look for the glowing stone monuments during the encounter and use or approach them to temporarily clear or reduce the black mist. No exact duration is established.
What does the Flashlight do?
Shining the Flashlight on Hyakume slows their movement, making it easier to inspect the group. It does not replace the Bow as the completion tool.
What finishes the encounter?
Shoot the target-like eye of the special Hyakume with the Bow. All Hyakume then disappear and the encounter completes.
What rewards can Hyakume give?
The current Night Furniture relationship lists 黒い結晶 / Black Crystal and 黒曜石の数珠 / Obsidian Rosary as possible Hyakume rewards. They are not presented as a guaranteed pair.
Is the Hyakume Wooden Plaque required?

Why did my Bow shot do nothing?
You likely hit a normal Hyakume. The completion condition is the special target-eyed Hyakume, not an arbitrary member of the crowd.
Why is the screen turning black?
The encounter's black mist gradually obscures visibility. Use a glowing stone monument, then inspect the eyes while the crowd is easier to read.
